Quick answer: Companies that import inputs and export output usually set up in Sohar Free Zone, beside Sohar Port, for duty-free trade, tax holidays and 100% foreign ownership. Businesses that sell mainly into Oman choose a mainland company with premises in Sohar or a plot in Sohar Industrial Estate. Sohar is about two to three hours from Muscat and close to the UAE border.
Why set up in Sohar?
- Port-side industry. Sohar Port handles bulk, container and liquid cargo and sits at the centre of a large industrial cluster: metals and steel, aluminium, petrochemicals, food processing and construction materials.
- Outside the Strait of Hormuz. Ships reach Sohar without passing through the strait.
- Gateway to the UAE and GCC. The highway to the UAE border makes trucking to the wider Gulf straightforward, and the planned Oman–UAE railway will connect Sohar with Abu Dhabi.
- Space and supply chain. Land, warehouses and an established network of contractors, logistics providers and suppliers.

Costs
Free zone budgets depend mostly on land, warehouse or office leases, plus registration fees and visas. Mainland budgets follow the national fee structure. See free zone setup costs and the mainland cost breakdown, or use the cost calculator.
Visas and staffing
Free zone companies benefit from a reduced Omanisation requirement compared with the mainland. Investors can hold investor residence, and staff are sponsored through employment visas.
How we help
We prepare the project summary and application, liaise with the zone or MOCIIP, arrange premises and handle visas, bank account and customs registration, then stay on for accounting, VAT and PRO services. For more background read our guide to company formation in Sohar.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Sohar?
Sohar is the main city of North Al Batinah Governorate on Oman's northern coast, about two to three hours by road from Muscat and close to the UAE border.
Should I choose Sohar Free Zone or a mainland company?
Choose the free zone if you mainly import inputs and export output, or distribute across the GCC. Choose the mainland, or Sohar Industrial Estate, if most of your sales are inside Oman.
Can a Sohar Free Zone company sell in Oman?
Yes, but goods sold into Oman pass through customs with duty applied as for imports. Companies with large local sales often add a mainland company.
Do I need to be in Sohar to set up there?
No. We can prepare and submit the application remotely. Site visits are useful when choosing land or a warehouse.
