Frequently asked questions

Which business activities are not open to foreign investors in Oman?

A short list set by MOCIIP, which has included manpower recruitment, certain transport services, fuel stations and traditional crafts. Regulated sectors have their own rules. See 100% foreign ownership.

What is the difference between a CR and a trade licence in Oman?

The Commercial Registration (CR) records your company and its permitted activities. Operating also needs a municipality licence for your premises and any sector approvals. See business licences.

Can I run my Omani company from abroad?

Yes. Many owners manage remotely through local managers and service providers. Banking and visas are easier with at least one resident signatory.

How many visas can my company get?

It depends on your activities, premises and Omanisation compliance. The Ministry of Labour approves work permits against the company's profile. See employment visas.

Should I choose Sohar, Salalah or Duqm?

Sohar for metals, food and manufacturing near the UAE; Salalah for chemicals and transshipment; Duqm for large-scale industry and energy. Compare them on our free zones page.

Do I need an auditor?

Most companies must file audited financial statements with their annual tax return. See accounting and bookkeeping.

Can I open a company and get residency for my family?

Yes. Shareholders can obtain investor residence and then sponsor their spouse and children if they meet the conditions.

What currency is used, and can I move money in and out?

The Omani rial (OMR), pegged to the US dollar. There are no exchange controls, and profits and capital can be repatriated.

How do I protect my brand?

Register your trademark with MOCIIP's intellectual property department. Protection lasts 10 years and is renewable. See trademark registration.

How do I close a company I no longer need?

Through voluntary liquidation, which settles liabilities, cancels visas, obtains tax clearance and cancels the CR. See company liquidation.

How long does it take to register a company in Oman?

The Commercial Registration is often issued within a few working days once documents are ready; a full setup with licence, tax registration and bank account usually takes three to six weeks. See the registration process.

How much does it cost to set up a company in Oman?

A small mainland company without visas typically costs about OMR 1,500–3,500 in its first year. See setup costs and the calculator.

Which is better, an LLC or an SPC?

An SPC suits a single owner; an LLC suits two or more shareholders. See compare business structures.

Which city is best for my business?

Muscat suits most service and trading companies; Sohar, Salalah and Duqm suit port-based industry and logistics. See business setup by city.

Do I need an office to register a company?

You need a registered address accepted by the municipality. Many service businesses can use a flexible or virtual office.

Is there a minimum capital?

There is no fixed minimum for most mainland activities; regulated sectors have their own rules. See 100% foreign ownership.

Do you provide visas for people who are not setting up a company?

No. We arrange visas for owners, staff and families of companies we set up or manage.

Can you help after the company is registered?
