International driving license in Oman

Whether you can drive in Oman on a foreign licence depends on whether you are a visitor or a resident, and on which country issued your licence. Driving licences are regulated by the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Visitors and tourists

Visitors can usually drive a hired or private vehicle for the duration of their visit using:

• A valid licence from their home country, for nationalities the ROP accepts, or
• An International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their national licence

Car-rental companies set their own conditions on top of this, including minimum age, years of experience and accepted licences, so check with the rental company before you travel.

GCC licence holders can generally drive in Oman with their GCC licence.

Residents

Once you become a resident of Oman, you are expected to hold an Omani driving licence. A foreign licence or IDP is not a long-term substitute.

There are two routes:

1. Licence exchange. Holders of licences from countries on the ROP's approved list can exchange them for an Omani licence without a full driving test. This usually involves an eye test, documents and a fee.
2. Driving test. Holders of licences from other countries must pass the ROP's theory and practical tests, often after training at a licensed driving school.

Typical documents: passport, resident card, your foreign licence (possibly with an attested translation), photographs and an eye test certificate.

Getting an International Driving Permit in Oman

Holders of an Omani driving licence, including residents who have obtained one, can apply to the ROP for an International Driving Permit to drive abroad. The IDP is valid only together with the Omani licence.

• Carry your licence, IDP if needed, passport or resident card, and the vehicle documents whenever you drive.
• Speed cameras are widespread, and fines are recorded against your licence or the vehicle.
• Insurance cover depends on holding a licence that is valid for your status, so drive only with one.
