How to convert a visit visa in Oman

Many people come to Oman on a visit visa, find a job or start a company, and then want to stay on a residence visa. In many cases a change of visa status can be done inside Oman, without leaving the country, provided the conditions are met and the sponsor applies through the proper channel.

What "converting" a visit visa means

Strictly speaking, you don't convert the visit visa itself. Your new sponsor, an employer, your own company or a family member, applies for a residence visa in your name, and the Royal Oman Police (ROP) approves a change of status so the new visa can be issued while you are still in Oman. If change of status isn't permitted for your case, you exit and re-enter on the new entry visa.

Converting to an employment visa

1. The employer obtains a work permit (labour clearance) from the Ministry of Labour for your occupation. Omanisation rules and reserved job titles apply. See employment visas.
2. The employer applies for the employment visa with the ROP and requests the change of status.
3. The change-of-status fee is paid, if one applies.
4. You complete the medical test at an approved centre.
5. Biometrics and resident card. You are fingerprinted and receive your resident card.

Converting to an investor visa

If you have registered your own company in Oman, for example an SPC or LLC, the company can sponsor your investor residence. Once the company is licensed, the application follows the same pattern: ROP application, change of status, medical, biometrics and resident card.

Converting to a family (dependant) visa

If your spouse or parent is resident in Oman and meets the sponsorship conditions, they can apply for a family visa and request a change of status. Attested marriage or birth certificates are essential, so have them ready before you travel.

• Passport, with at least six months' validity
• The current visit visa or entry record
• Sponsor documents: CR and work permit for employers, or resident card and salary proof for family sponsors
• Photographs
• Attested degree certificates for professions that require them
• Medical fitness results, obtained in Oman

Important timing rules

• Apply well before your visit visa expires. Overstaying, even by a few days, creates fines and can complicate the change of status.
• Some visit visa types may not be eligible for change of status, and rules differ by nationality. Check before you rely on it.
• Keep your visit visa valid until the new visa is issued, or follow the ROP's instructions on any extension.
